What Part of Your Timeline Do You Live In?

September 29, 2026  |  Heather Frank

I’m not a musical person, but even I understand music’s power. A familiar song can bring back memories in an instant, and lyrics can transport me to the past… some good, some bad. Praise music often stirs up memories of old sins and mistakes, but the best songs culminate in Jesus’ love, sacrifice, and victory. That mix – guilt, remorse, joy, thankfulness, relief – brings tears to my eyes every time.

It’s tempting to live in the past: replaying old scenes, refighting old battles, holding onto old grudges. We spend enormous energy reliving what’s already happened. Here’s the sad truth: the past is over.

The second place our minds like to linger is the future… filled with hopes and fantasies, but also fears and anxieties. The one thing we know for certain about our future is our destination; everything else is unknown. Like shadows of the past, visions of the future aren’t real. And both – old wounds and future fears – pull us away from the one place we can actually shape our reality: the present.

It’s foolish to squander the present chasing fears that haven’t happened and wounds that are already gone. I’m not saying we shouldn’t learn from the past or plan for the future, but those should serve the present, not steal from it. Remembering the past to become a better steward of your mind and decisions today? Good. Letting the past distort your view of God, yourself, or your circumstances? That’s how Satan builds strongholds in your mind. It’s brainwashing, and it’s a battle we fight constantly.

I try to live by a 20-60-20 rule: 20% of my time reflecting on the past to propel me forward, 60% in the present relying on the Lord’s strength for today, and 20% planning for the future that God has designed me to abundantly walk into. Too much thought spent in any part of the timeline leads to either self-reliance or needless stress over what we can’t control.

Today, when your mind drifts backward or forward, ask why… and what it’s actually costing you. Refocus on the present, where God wants you and where you have maximum impact. God defined Himself as “I AM” – the timeless Present. Living in reality, in the present, is one of the most important spiritual disciplines there is. To maximize the most joy, peace, and freedom in the present, you need to actively submit to these two conditions:

Accepting your past and seek to understand how God wants to use it for your healing & abundant living. (Romans 8:28)

Owning His promises are true and foundational for your life everyday (regardless of the circumstance) to soothe your mind of the future’s unknowns. Living each day in the abundance of God’s promises to excite you about your future walking with the Lord. (2 Peter 1:4)

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank You for the wisdom of Your Word. I confess I often escape the present and waste energy on the past. Help me release it! Help me finally forgive those who’ve hurt me, since it’s my unfinished forgiveness that keeps me locked there. Heal me, Lord. Stop me from picking at old wounds or chasing relief in fantasies about tomorrow. Quiet my wandering mind and fix my focus on You – the true revealer of my reality. It’s only in the present that I find You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

SCRIPTURE

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” — Matthew 6:34

“God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.'” — Exodus 3:14

Time to RENEW & REWIRE…

Think through a typical day of your thoughts. Roughly what percentage of your mental energy goes to the past? Present? And future? How far off is that from the 20-60-20 rule?

Is there a past hurt you’re still holding onto that’s distorting how you see God, yourself, or your current circumstances? What would it look like to finally forgive that person, yourself, or just accept the situation?

What’s one fear about the future that’s stealing focus or distracting you from God’s actual plan for you right now?

Knowing that God – I AM – is always fully in the present, what can you do to engage with God in the present – NOW?!?!

When you’re dwelling on past struggles or caught up in future worries, how can you jolt yourself into a more present-appreciating mindset? How does this present-appreciating mindset reorient your prayer life, your closest relationships, and your key daily decisions?
