Dr Karl’s Positions on Key
Social Policy Issues
Many social policies are increasingly omitting common sense, ignoring sound science, and rejecting God’s design laws for health and holiness. Thus, social policy or treatment methods sometimes are antagonistic to good science and Bibilcal principles for health and life. I want to honor God by communicating and standing for a Biblical position which, by the way, is also health-enhancing. Many of these social policy issues have significant spiritual and psychological aspects, so integrating psychiatric science and Biblical faith, or another way of looking at it, taking a Bible-informed view of the psychiatric science, allows a better understanding of what healthy policy and living should look like.
Dr Karl strives to be clinically excellent, scientifically cutting-edge, while also being Bible-based and JESUS-centered in the guidance and high level behavioral health treatment I provide often for complicated and complex psychiatric issues. The world’s view of best treatment practices occasionally collides, rather abruptly at times, with a Biblical worldview of both conceptualizing the disorder and then applying the healthiest, least dangerous treatment.

Hippocrates, in circa 400BC, recognized healthcare was deteriorating due to poor patient-doctor relations. At the heart of this relational strain was the gross unethical and conscience-violating actions of many medical practitioners. Hippocrates’ Oath drew a deep line in the sand, admonishing society, but specifically calling out his medical colleagues for several specific gross conscience violations. In his famous Oath, Hippocrates vowed before his spiritual gods, mentors, colleagues, and patients to conduct himself and push the culture’s medical community to the highest professional standard in line with moral, ethical, and spiritual ideals. In doing so, the doctor patient relationship would be restored to its unique, special, cherished and trusted position to allow an honest flow of information which maximizes the respect, honor, and dignity God bestows on all His created beings. Hippocrates original oath, which in my day, was mandatory to recite upon our medical school graduation ceremony, is at the end of this document. The following Christian Clinician’s Oath is an updated Christian version of Hippocrates original Oath, addressing the same issues and promising the identical professional conduct and ethical treatment guidelines Hippocrates vowed and demanded.
I use this oath to provide me a Biblical worldview, guiding and helping me steward the professional calling, gift, and opportunity God has blessed me with in order to glorify Him while I bring His healing to those He places in my life.

- With God’s grace, I will live according to this profession
To ensure Honey Lake Clinic reflects a Biblical worldview as we communicate and apply God’s word to treat our patient’s. And to be a bright light to our medical colleagues, to society at large and to non-medical communities, the following is a list of significant controversial issues, and Honey Lake Clinic’s position.
Summary of Issues and Position
1. Abortion
A small human baby inside their mother’s uterus is a genetically unique and different human being than the mother. Killing it inside the womb or anytime after during or after the delivery process is murder, and thus a sin and I am opposed. Rape or incest is not a valid reason to abort a resultant pregnancy. I have treated a number of women who were raped, became pregnant, and having a baby to love them and be he result of something so bad was a positive life-altering moment in their transformation.
- An ectopic pregnancy is not living pregnancy or life and endangers the life of the mother, and thus can be extracted.
2. Physician Assisted Suicide
A doctor encouraging, endorsing or giving a prescription to facilitate a patient’s suicide is being an accomplice to murder, thus a sin and and I am opposed.
3. Euthanasia
When a healthcare professional actually does something to directly kill a patient. This is murder, thus a sin and I am opposed.
4. Homosexuality
Sexual sin, thus I am opposed. Much scientific research clearly shows same-sex attraction is not a condition a person is born with. Homosexual lifestyle is a decision, often starting as an unconscious one, with its genesis from a variety of psychological issues/struggles/hurts from their past.
5. Same Sex Attraction
Is dysfunctional, but if not fantasized about or acted on, is not sinful.
Transgender (Gender Confusion/Dysphoria/Dissonance/Incongruence/Evasion) – denying God’s biological design and authority for oneself is elevating self above God, thus is sin and I am opposed.
Much research shows gender confusion to be a psychological issue needing psychological treatment.
It is not a biological issue and thus biological interventions have not helped.
6. Transgender (Gender Confusion/Dysphoria/Dissonance/ Incongruence/Evasion)

7. Divorce
Opposed. God often wants to use a believer to impact the other spouse, or to show outsiders the blessing, peace, and power when we follow and prioritize God in pursuit of holiness instead of pursuing our own happiness and needs. So honoring our vows and staying in a difficult marriage is our calling. But in rare cases, the Bible discusses a couple scenarios to be in significant communication with God to determine what He calls you to do.
- If physically or sexually unsafe (self or children) – can separate and work to reconciliation or permanent separation.
- Your spouse divorces you.
- Biblical stipulations to consider divorce, which should be the last resort are the following:
- Spouse commits adultery or perpetrates sexual immorality with you, the present spouse.
- Married to an unbeliever who is unwilling to change after significant amount of time.
- Again, I would pursue separation for a number of years, allowing God to work in the heart of the aberrant spouse. We often expect someone to “get it and change” in a matter of weeks or months. But often we need to have self-control to want to run into divorce and patience for several years to see what God might do.
8. Legalization of Marijuana, Psychedelics
These chemicals are harmful to the brain, impair thinking, reality, emotions, and decision-making. We are to be under the influence of the Holy Spirit, and not chemicals. Thus I am opposed to legislation which makes it easier to access these brain harming chemicals, and also give a message to young people that these chemicals are safe, because they are legal.
Detailed Position Explanation
Abortion/Physician Assisted Suicide/Euthanasia
We believe human biological life of every human begins when egg and sperm unite and form a one cell zygote. Life is started by God, and God will be the determiner of each person’s graduation from this physical world and release from their physical body. The intentional termination of that life by any person any time after conception, would constitute murder, is a sin, and Honey Lake Clinic is opposed to it.
1. Exceptions:
- Killing in the context of war,
- Capital punishment for an adult who commits a witnessed murder, or
- Killing someone in self-defense when innocent lives are in imminent danger and no other way to avoid predictable and otherwise unavoidable loss of life.
2. Abortion: Rape, incest, or unhealthy baby are not acceptable exceptions.
- Exception – Ectopic pregnancy which by definition cannot survive, while it also places the mother at significant risk of death.
3. Physician Assisted Suicide
- Occurs when a healthcare professional either knowingly and intentionally prescribes lethal meds so a patient can commit suicide via overdose, or the professional encourages and coaches a person as to how to kill themselves.
- Healthcare workers should act to save lives and help struggling suicidal people access treatment. If a person truly wants to commit suicide, that is a decision between them and God. It should not be facilitated by any other person, especially those called to care for someone. A person is not a pet, that we mercy kill when suffering. Therefore, every season of life has its rewards and opportunities, and even in suffering, humans can experience a richness in what might be their final season of life.
4. Euthanasia
- when a healthcare professional themselves actually physically administers a lethal agent with intent to kill someone. Usually for the perceived benefit of the patient, or the patient’s close loved ones.
- Again, people should care for someone and advocate to preserve that person’s life, not end it.
Sexual Activity
we believe sexual activity is an incredible gift designed by God to deliver so many spiritual, psychological, relational, and physical blessings and benefits. For sexual activity to produce this fruit, God designed it to occur within specific parameters. When used outside of those protocols/boundaries/laws, sexual activity can cause harm, damaging the participants immediately and causing lasting adverse ripples from their inner being and throughout their life.
- God’s Healthy Sexual Activity Protocols – Psychological, Spiritual, and Sexual fulfillment is maximized when the following are lived out.
- Physical bonding through sexual activity is the last step of a unique, deep, and lasting relational joining (following ongoing spiritual and psychological joining) between one consenting biological male and one consenting biological female in the legally committed relationship of marriage.
- God created and formed a woman (Eve) from a physical body part of man (Adam). Thus during sexual activity, men and women’s bodies, that complement each others by design and purpose, are physically reunited as one being.
- Each partner has agape love for each other that prioritizes the other’s psychological safety and needs. This love strives to emulate the love Christ has for His bride, the Church and its believers.
- Exclusivity – Sexual activity is a unique and full intertwining of two people. No room exists for a third person, neither during the physical activity nor in the head of one of the participants. Commitment, love, and safety doesn’t exist when one partner fears they are competing with a third person that has entered the relationship that God only designed for two people.
- God is a third party and at the center of the couple’s relationship in all ways.
- Each partner is fully consenting and of appropriate development and capacity to understand and engage in a fully committed relationship that evolves into the expression of physical unity through sexual activity.
- The World’s Unhealthy Sexual Activity Protocols (Sins) – when people are unhealthy psychologically and spiritually, the following sexual activities can occur. If so, they will cause more psychological, spiritual, and physiological damage. Psychological and spiritual intervention is required to heal the underlying struggles leading to these activities. And for some of these, the underlying injury and struggle is significant and requires intensive guidance and discipleship.
- Pre-marital sexual activity – sexual activity is designed by God for husband (biological male) and wife (biological female) after they are legally united in marriage. Sexual activity before marriage is a sin, unhealthy psychologically, is relationally confusing, and physiologically commits to a person before the more lifelong commitment in place.
- Even though two people are married doesn’t mean they are ready to engage in sexual activity. Deep psychological and spiritual commitment and uniting should precede the physical uniting.
- Extramarital sexual activity – sexual activity is designed by God for two people only – the husband and wife who are joined legally in marriage. Once married, romantic or sexual involvement with someone other than their spouse introduces a third person to the relationship. Thus sexual or romantic relationships with someone other than their spouse, is prohibited.
- One spouse being physically unable to engage in sexual activity does not alter the prohibition.
- One spouse giving permission for the other to engage someone else does not alter the prohibition.
- Masturbation (one individual sexually satisfying themself) – God designed sexual pleasure to be enjoyed as a husband and wife engage each other, attending and submitting to while satisfying the healthy needs of each other. Masturbation is one person attending to and satisfying their own needs. Glorifying themself and submitting to no one but themself. Continued masturbation interferes with a person’s ability to engage in a healthy psychospiritual relationship with their spouse and leads to unfulfilling sexual intimacy, and often their own physiological sexual dysfunction.
- Pornography – God designed sexual pleasure to be an intimate expression and actual connection between and husband and wife.
- Creation of pornography –
- Activity is only a physical act devoid of the psychological, spiritual, and relational elements.
- Goal is not deep connection, consummation, and expression of a loving and committed relationship between 2 people.
- Invites intruders into the sexual activity to view, film, coach, guide, etc
- Creation of pornography –
- Sadistic or Masochistic Activity – Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, and should be honored and stewarded well. Activities that are demeaning, punitive, or cause pain or humiliation are prohibited regardless of a parties consent or whether one gets pleasure.
- Role Playing – Sexual activity ideally is the last element of a deep connection and revelation and sharing of two people’s innermost being with each other. Transparent, honest, and vulnerable. This should be accepted, honored, respected, and celebrated by the other spouse. Role playing communicates impressions such as, ‘you are not enough,’ ‘I don’t like what you are offering,’ ‘I want something else.’ But goes short of viewing pornography or overtly finding an actual new partner.
- Same Sex Attraction (SSA) and Homosexuality – sexual activity is for one man and one woman. God didn’t design sexual activity for a man with a man, and a woman with a woman and states this in the Old and New Testament. Thus same sex partners (whether married or not) is prohibited.
- Same sex attraction and the lifestyle that goes with it – Homosexuality – is not something that a person is born with as a condition, normal variant, genetic coding, or genetic mutation.
- Same sex attraction and the lifestyle that goes with it – Homosexuality – is a decision mostly based on unconscious or very deep and often camouflaged thought processes. Due to a variety of experiences a person has (usually, but not always, in their first 8 – 10 years of life) and their interpretations of these events, instead of the normal heterosexual development God designed for us, a person develops a distorted and dysfunctional path of reasoning about love, connection, acceptance, fear, identity, security, sex, and many other concepts having to deal with their relationship with themself and others.
- Because SSA and homosexuality is a result of faulty or pathological decision-making, same sex attraction can be addressed, treated, and changed by addressing the underlying psychological aspects leading to the dysfunctional or pathological process that produces SSA and a homosexual lifestyle.
- Someone sexually active with members of the same biological sex and/or living a homosexual lifestyle is sinning. Like all of us who are sinners, we need love, forgiveness, grace, and then guidance to heal our inner wounds, correct misinformation/lies/deceptions, and guidance as to how to apply the Bible’s mind management principles to renew our minds and transform our lives by living as He has instructed.
- Homosexual sin differs from other sins because most homosexuals believe they are born this way, or for some reason view their decisions as not sinful. When people commit most other sins, they have a recognition that they are sins. They might deny they are doing them, but if they were told someone would do that same thing to them, they would usually recognize it as sin.
Gender Dysphoria/Dissonance/Incongruence/ Confusion/Evasion
The condition when a person struggles in accepting their God and birth assigned chromosomal sex/gender.
- Except for rare cases of intersex (ambiguous sex traits at birth) births, everyone is biologically, genetically, and clearly born as either a male or female. This includes chromosomal, physical, hormonal, and brain chemistry differences between the 2 sexes.
- God doesn’t make mistakes. God has a wonderful plan for our life and designs and genetically assigns/codes each person’s sex/gender at birth as part of the equipping necessary for us to walk into and fulfill that plan.
- Due to various psychological reasons, instead of comfortably accepting and identifying as the gender/sex God assigned them at birth, some people develop discomfort identifying or referring to themselves as their birth sex/gender, or don’t want others to see or refer to them as their birth sex/gender.
- These struggles with self-acceptance and identity formation usually emanate from various subtle and ongoing relationship dynamics with parents, siblings, and/or peers, especially same sex peers. Occasionally, sexual abuse or premature exposure to sexual elements during childhood plays a significant role disrupting a person’s sexuality or gender acceptance and expression.
- This struggle accepting the sex they are genetically assigned at birth we call Gender Confusion/Dissonance/Dysphoria/Incongruence/Evasion.
- Transgender is the general term used to describe someone whose psychological gender identity or full expression is not the same as their biological sex at birth.
- As a result of many societal influences, the amount of people who struggle to accept their genetically assigned and biological sex with is a rapidly growing over the last 25 years, and especially since 2015.
- Transgender was mainly males who were uncomfortable being males and wanted to be females.
- More recently, a huge shift has occurred fueled by social media and other contagion factors such that the huge majority of gender confusion cases are pre-pubescent and adolescent females wanting to be males.
- In the past, most people who struggled with what was then termed “Gender Identity Disorder” and then “Gender Dysphoria” that rose to a significant level of distress or impaired functioning, were treated with psychotherapy to address their underlying psychological issues related to their formation of self and identity. This treatment was quite successful and beneficial to a very high percentage who were willing to engage treatment.
- When people believe in absurdities, they commit atrocities – Voltaire. Over the past 30 years, instead of using this community standard low harm, high success treatment model, a small fraction of our healthcare system has pushed many patients, and especially children, into a drastically and radically different treatment pipeline promising peace, joy, and a cure, but is dangerous and harmful in all spheres – physically, psychologically, relationally, and spiritually – and incurs many long-term and some irreversible damages. This dangerous approach is termed “Gender Affirming Therapy” or GAT which:
- Is a social, chemical, and surgical transitioning process with very little good scientific data around it, and most of the literature clearly supports the notion that it is quite harmful with minimal benefit.
- Never addresses the underlying issue for the gender confusion to start with.
- Does not improve the incidence of depression, anxiety, addiction and suicide after full transitioning.
- Leaves the patient with a whole host of other stressors and traumas including:
- Mutilating surgeries.
- Permanent infertility
- No sexual functioning or satisfaction
- Exposure to synthetic hormones that increase the risk for many serious illnesses including cardiovascular and cancers.
- Exposure to the opposite-sex hormones than their brain was designed to interact with leading to various psychiatric struggles.
- Psychological trauma from the many drastic medical/surgical procedures and alienation from both males and females as well as being groomed as a young child and pushed into heavy decision-making long before they were psychologically ready and their brain was formed enough to comprehend and process.
- Thus many co-morbid psychiatric disorders and struggles.
- Much “buyer’s remorse” leading to anger, betrayal, bitterness, hurt, and distrust.
- Many spiritual struggles with identity, purpose, connection, belonging, hope, guilt, shame, self-condemnation, lack of accepting self, etc.
- Denying God’s biological design and identity for you is both psychologically unhealthy and a sin.
- Our focus is to compassionately love, accept, and connect with a person struggling with their identity and assigning sex/gender, then help them unpack and heal from the psychological issues, misinformation, misinterpretations, distortions, or hurts which precipitate their gender acceptance struggles.
- Regarding clinically named “Gender Affirming Therapy” efforts to help the gender confused individual reject their God-assigned gender, HLC opposes any efforts which deny the struggling person’s God-assigned gender. We also oppose any “treatment” attempts to transition the individual to another gender.
- Chemical transitioning is the practice of prescribing medications, usually hormones to stop puberty, block their natural sex hormones, or add the opposite sex hormones. HLC opposes all these.
- Surgical transitioning – surgically attacking their assigned sex anatomy and trying to replace it with the opposite sex anatomy.
- Social transitioning
- Regarding pronoun use – HLC opposes any efforts to refer to the gender confused individual with pronouns different than their assigned sex as it denies God’s design and the truth/reality of who they are and would require staff to speak in lies.
- Regarding name change – A person can choose a nickname or even legally change their name. HLC will call a person by the name they request. HLC will request the individual to choose a name that is neutral rather than one that is more classically aligned with the gender opposite their God-assigned/birth gender.
- Regarding clothing and grooming – this, like name, is a person’s preference and doesn’t ask a staff to speak or act in a way that denies truth and reality.
- Bathroom or room assignment choice – HLC will assign bathrooms and rooms based on an individual’s birth/God-assigned sex, not on the patient’s view of their gender.
Hippocratic Oath
I swear by Apollo Healer, by Asclepius, by Hygieia, by Panacea, and by all the gods and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will carry out, according to my ability and judgment, this oath and this indenture.
To hold my teacher in this art equal to my own parents; to make him partner in my livelihood; when he is in need of money to share mine with him; to consider his family as my own brothers, and to teach them this art, if they want to learn it, without fee or indenture; to impart precept, oral instruction, and all other instruction to my own sons, the sons of my teacher, and to indentured pupils who have taken the Healer’s oath, but to nobody else.
I will use those dietary regimens which will benefit my patients according to my greatest ability and judgment, and I will do no harm or injustice to them.[6] Neither will I administer a poison to anybody when asked to do so, nor will I suggest such a
course. Similarly I will not give to a woman a pessary to cause abortion. But I will keep pure and holy both my life and my art. I will not use the knife, not even, verily, on sufferers from stone, but I will give place to such as are craftsmen therein.
Into whatsoever houses I enter, I will enter to help the sick, and I will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm, especially from abusing the bodies of man or woman, bond or free. And whatsoever I shall see or hear in the course of my profession, as well as outside my profession in my intercourse with men, if it be what should not be published abroad, I will never divulge, holding such things to be holy secrets.
Now if I carry out this oath, and break it not, may I gain for ever reputation among all men for my life and for my art; but if I break it and forswear myself, may the opposite befall me.[5]
